Have you ever wondered how cruel kids can be? Have you ever wondered what teenagers would do if they had any power to do it? Stay tuned...
Shiina is an energetic teenage girl who always thinks positively about the world and never gives up. On a summer visit to her grandparents' house she finds a new friend. It's a friendly, star shaped creature that can fly and change shape. Shiina decides to kall it Hoshimaru (because of it's shape). Later on she becomes friends with a girl named Akira, who also has one of these creatures, she however doesn't want it. But soon Shiina finds out not all of these creatures are friendly. Some are pretty dangerous while others seem to be totaly indifferent.
Now, to clear up some confusion about the anime. Despite the broadcaster being Kids Station that does not mean this is a kiddy anime. It was broadcasted between 0 and 2AM on that channel (how many kids are up at that time?). It is a pretty disturbing anime, with a lot of dead people. It basically handles with teenager fears from their point of view - even a little thing can be very tragic at that age. But the series goes a little further... the authors gave the kids monsters with overwhelming powers to do with them as they see fit. Can you remember what you "wanted" to do to someone that hurt you at the age of 15 but "couldn't"? These kids can...
To sum it all up - it's a good anime, with no blood to speak of. The disturbing part I mentioned is portrayed in character action/reaction and the atmosphere created by that. The story is more or less divided in a couple layers... with none quite finishing off. Watch it if you're into stuff that forces you to think about what's wrong with this world. Skip it if you're into the merry-go-happy stuff.
