Future Boy Conan
The series directed by Hayao Miyazaki (who also did the character design) talks about a lone boy fighting an army. It is clearly an anti war story that is set in 21st century, after the planet has been devastated by powerhungry leaders. While watching you have to consider it was created in 1978 so don't expect too much eyecandy
It is the year 2028 and Conan lives with his grandfather on a lonely island. It has been 20 years since the war and Conan has never seen another human aside from the grandpa. But things change after he finds an unconscious girl on the beach. At first he is terrified but soon after she recovers they become friends... until some other people come to the island searching for her. But these people arent friendly. They kidnap Lana and shoot Conan's grandpa. Left all alone Conan decides he would save Lana at any cost so he builds himself a ship and sails off towards his big adventure.
It's a nice 26 part (28min each) series altho you can't say it's modern... but it has its charm. I enjoyed rewatching it after about 12 years (I first saw it when I was a kid... Italian dub). Overall it's very good. The only bad side to it would be it's age... for todays kids anyway.
